At least 6000 residents of Rongai, Molo and Kuresoi North Sub Counties are set to get clean drinking water at their doorsteps after the County Government of Nakuru embarked on water drilling and solarizing project.
Water being the most essential life component had for many years been unrealistic to most families in Nakuru county, but the recent intervention by the governor Susan Kihika has brought joy and hope to families who had to struggle and scramble for the scarce commodity.
The residents of the three sub counties can now breathe a shine of relief as they will no longer have to track over 3 km to access clean water.
The green estate project at Elburgon ward in Molo Sub County, Tuiyobei and Kimamoi water points at Rongai Sub County and Tachasis water project in Nyota ward in Kuresoi North will guarantee the residents here clean water.
“I want to laud governor Kihika and her administration for prioritizing water in this financial year. We had suffered a lot during the dry season scrabbling for water with animals from river Molo not bearing in mind that the water was contaminated and harmful for consumption,” said Protus Rotich, resident of Kimamoi area.
Nakuru county government CECM for water Nelson Mara noted that they have managed to move the county from 50% in 2022 on accessibility to water by resident to 64% in 2025.
“We have drilled and installed in most places 50,000 liters water tanks and done extensions to an average of 2km to ensure more residents have access to clean water,” said Mara.
“The project heralds a major development in the areas, which for the past had residents relying on raw water from the rivers and wells for home, farm and domestic utilization,” the CECM added.
Since its elevation to the city status, Nakuru population has continued to expand, pushing the county government to devolve supply of most essential services like water so that all residents across all wards have a feeling of county government.
The county water Chief Officer Stella Mwaura noted that access to clean water by residents will save the county millions spent on addressing water borne diseases and also give school going children humble time to focus on classwork as opposed to fetching water.
“The goal of this project is to provide clean and safe water to underserved residents at the sub counties in rural setup. Previously we observed school children spent hours fetching water instead of focusing on classwork. Governor Kihika initiative aims at saving lives besides ensuring students have time for classwork,” said Mwaura.
