The Government has announced the reopening of applications for the National Youth Opportunities towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project, following a lower-than-expected uptake during the initial phase.
The announcement was made by Eng. Joseph Mbugua, Principal Secretary (PS), State Department for Roads, during the County NYOTA Project Stakeholder Sensitization Forum held in Nyandarua County.
According to the PS, Nyandarua County only achieved a 53 percent uptake, falling short of the 90 percent target set for the program.
He emphasized the need to reach out to the intended beneficiaries, particularly at the grassroots level, noting that “a missed target is a missed opportunity.”
The NYOTA Project is a flagship initiative of the Government, reflecting the Government’s firm commitment to addressing youth unemployment through practical, inclusive, and results-oriented interventions.
It also aims to empower young people through funding for entrepreneurship and self-employment.
Applications are open to youth aged 18–29 years, with a special allocation of 5 percent reserved for persons with disabilities aged up to 35 years.
PS Mbugua urged officials from the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) and the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA), to collaborate closely in ensuring the program reaches those who need it most.
He particularly called on local chiefs to play an active role, in mobilizing and verifying the eligibility of the youth.
“We need you to help us target the real beneficiaries at the grassroots level. This is a chance to transform the lives of our youth, and we must not miss it,” said the PS.
He further stated that later this month, forums will be convened in all constituencies for youth valuation and verification. Grassroots-level training will also begin during the period.
Notably, those who had applied previously will not need to reapply, as their applications will be considered during the new registration window.
Nyandarua Deputy Governor, Mathaara Mwangi, expressed optimism about the project’s impact, saying it would enable young people to launch their own businesses and become economically self-reliant.
“This initiative gives our youth a golden opportunity to better their lives and the best part is, the registration and disbursement process is simple and mobile phone-based,” said Mathaara
PS Mbugua also warned applicants that the funds are strictly for business development and not for personal use or gratification including buying alcohol or drugs.
The government is now calling on all stakeholders, especially NGAO officials, to support the program’s implementation and to monitor its success on the ground.
