Over 180 youths graduate from Wajir ICT training

More than 180 youths from Wajir East Constituency have graduated after completing a six-week digital skills training programme on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and online safety, aimed at improving employability and promoting responsible use of digital platforms.

The training, implemented by Huawei in collaboration with the Ministry of Information, Communications and The Digital Economy, and supported by the National Government, targeted over 200 youths from the constituency, with 180 successfully completing the course.

Speaking on Friday during the graduation ceremony, Culture and Heritage Principal Secretary Umi Bashir commended the trainees for investing their time in skills relevant to the digital economy, noting strong participation by young women.

“The digital world is where opportunities are. These skills will enable you to earn a living, whether through employment or self-employment,” said Bashir.

She urged graduates to take advantage of global competitions and opportunities linked to Huawei programmes, including international innovation challenges. Bashir also acknowledged Wajir East MP Adan Daud for championing digital legislation and supporting youth-focused initiatives, saying the training aligns with national laws on cyber safety and digital innovation.

Wajir County Commissioner Karuku Ngumo said the programme reduced costs for youths who would otherwise travel outside the county for similar training.

“This programme has brought skills to the doorstep of our youths. You have been taught how to earn a living, not just given short-term support,” said Ngumo. He cautioned participants to apply their knowledge responsibly, particularly under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018, warning against misuse of social media that could attract legal consequences.

Ngumo further encouraged beneficiaries of the Nyota youth empowerment programme to combine financial support with newly acquired digital skills to improve livelihoods.

MP Daud said the training responds to growing demand for digital skills and online work, adding that an ICT hub has been established in the constituency to support graduates in accessing remote job opportunities.

“Youth are the majority in this country and in this constituency. The future is in ICT, and you now have the tools. Use them wisely to build your lives and support your families,” said Daud. He advised graduates to remain vigilant against online scams and avoid risky job offers, urging them to leverage digital opportunities while remaining based in Wajir.

Lead trainer Adams Makau noted that the Huawei DigiTruck programme had been in Wajir for four weeks, teaching participants basic computer literacy, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, online safety, and data protection.

“The graduates are now digitally empowered and can use these skills to seek employment, apply for online jobs, or market their businesses,” said Makau.

One of the beneficiaries, Muna Hassan, thanked the government and partners for bringing the programme to Wajir, saying it had opened opportunities for young women seeking digital literacy and employment. The Huawei DigiTruck programme is part of ongoing efforts to expand digital inclusion and youth empowerment across the country.
