Seafarers’ union leaders call for full adherence to constitution

The national chairman of the Seafarers Union of Kenya, Capt. Peter Munga, has urged members and officials to align all union activities with the constitution, as a special conference to elect officials to vacant positions was proposed for November 19.

Speaking during a members’ meeting at Ronald Ngala Hall, Capt. Munga said the chairman is responsible for ensuring the constitution is followed from the first page to the last.

“The constitution is our guide, and as chairman it is my duty to see that it is followed fully,” he said.

He noted that the constitution provides for the Annual Conference to be held in September, with the General Secretary giving members at least four weeks’ written notice.

It was proposed that a special conference be held on November 19, 2026, to elect officials to the positions of Secretary General, Assistant Chairman and Treasurer, so that every office-holder serves with a clear mandate.

“Once the conference is called as required, members will have their say, and the union can move forward together,” he said.

On membership, he reminded members that the constitution sets an admission fee of Sh200, followed by monthly subscriptions of Sh100 for members not in employment and Sh500 for those employed.

He encouraged the union to ensure all registrations, forms and membership cards, including those from 2023, are processed in line with these provisions.

On finances, Capt. Munga emphasised openness in handling members’ contributions.

“Members’ money belongs to the members. Every shilling should be recorded, reported and open for inspection,” he said.

He added that the union will also work to clear its office rent of about Sh120,000 and clarify the status of its office. He said that until the special conference is held, decisions, appointments and spending should follow the constitution.

“The union belongs to its members, not to any individual office-holder,” he added.
