Siblings struck by lightning as they herd cows

Two boys have been admitted at Samburu County Referral hospital after they were struck by lightning at Nguroto area in Samburu Central Sub County.

According to their father, Samuel Legeto, the boys aged 8 and 10 years were seated under a tree as they herded livestock on Tuesday afternoon when they were struck by lightning.

“They rushed to a nearby tree for shelter when it started raining and that is where they were struck,” he said.

However, Dr. Mathew Kagongo told KNA that the boys are out of danger and in stable condition.

Kagongo said the patients have been treated with anti-biotic drugs to prevent infection on the burn wounds and were rehydrated, adding that the patients are recuperating well and would soon be discharged.

He said the most injured among the two was the eight-year-old boy who suffered 8 per cent injury with second degree burns.

“What we feared was internal injuries that can be caused by lightning but apparently they were minimal,” he said.

Samburu county government has been called upon to install lightning arresters in the area to prevent such incidents in the future.
