Bobasi MP in Kisii County, Innocent Obiri, has advocated for a well-managed national economy if the country was to tame current runaway unemployment.
The lawmaker observed that a vibrant economy will spawn the growth of industries, thus creating a lot of jobs.
Presiding over Nyamache secondary school Education Day cum prize-giving ceremony in the constituency, Obiri explained that there will be no need for qualified youth to do jobs that undermine their dignity or to pester elected leaders to secure them the employment when the economy is sound.
With over 200 secondary schools in the electoral area, the legislator said disbursement of NG-CDF bursaries was inadequate to cater for needy learners due to the high number of eligible students.
He advised the school management to do a proposal to his office on the erection of a perimeter wall and procurement of a standby generator for the school, which he noted posed challenges to the school.
Elkanah Onyando, the board of management chairman, who had requested funding for the two projects, commended the cooperation from the Education Ministry through the area sub-county office in the implementation of key policies.
The school principal, Hezron Obike, decried chronic absenteeism in the school, fearing it will compromise the current performance in national examinations.
He attributed it to failure by parents/guardians to honour their fee payment obligation, forcing the learners to stay at home.
Obike, however, admitted the learners affected hailed from poor family backgrounds and petitioned the MP to seek donors to sponsor the needy students.
During the occasion a total of 164 students who sat last year’s KCSE and qualified to join public universities were awarded various prizes.
