Sports PS flags off 2025 East Africa Safari Classic

State Department for Sports Principal Secretary (PS)  Elijah Mwangi has officially flagged off the 2025 East Africa Safari Classic Rally, reaffirming Kenya’s position as the rally capital of Africa and a leading destination for major global sporting events.

Speaking during the ceremony in Kwale, Mwangi noted that it was an honour to preside over one of the world’s most challenging motorsport events, adding that Kenya’s continued hosting of international competitions underscores the government’s commitment to using sports to transform lives, empower the youth and create opportunities.

He noted that this year’s rally has attracted 60 international rally drivers representing 75 nationalities, with competitors drawn from countries including Italy, Greece, Sweden, the Netherlands, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Ireland, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Norway, Andorra, Poland, Rwanda, Libya, Portugal, France and Kenya, among others.

He highlighted Kenya’s recent milestones in the sports sector, including the annual hosting of the WRC Safari Rally since 2021, the successful staging of the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), and preparations underway for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 27).

The PS urged all competitors and organisers to strictly adhere to the Event Permit issued by the Kenya Motorsport Federation (KMSF), emphasising that all drivers must hold valid KMSF competition licences.

He also acknowledged organisers, sponsors, volunteers and officials for enabling Kenya to host the 12th edition of the iconic rally.

The nine-day event covers nearly 2,000 kilometres, traversing scenic and challenging terrains across Diani in Kwale County, the Taita Hills in Taita-Taveta County, and the Amboseli plains in Kajiado County.

Mwangi underscored the significant economic impact the rally brings to host counties, noting that the presence of visiting teams and fans will boost trade, hospitality and local businesses across Kwale, Taita Taveta, Kajiado, Makueni, Kilifi and Mombasa.

The PS described the rally as a demanding test of endurance, precision, discipline, fitness and logistical planning.

“This year’s edition has attracted more than 60 cars, with competitors drawn from Kenya, Europe, Africa and Asia. Kenya is represented by six drivers including; Baldev Chager, Joey Ghose, Farhaaz Khan, Shakeel Khan and Ahmed Elkerrami, whose participation demonstrates that homegrown talent continues to shine on the global stage,” said Mwangi.

He further noted the significant economic impact the event brings to the host counties, stating that the presence of the rally is expected to spur increased economic activity.

“I urge all competitors to race safely and uphold sportsmanship, while thanking organisers and host communities for their dedication and support,” he said.

Started in 2003, the East Africa Safari Classic Rally is a unique biennial event showcasing historic vehicles manufactured before 1985 and designed to recreate the raw spirit and legendary challenge of the original Safari Rally first held in 1953.

The PS noted that the Rally not only celebrates Kenya’s rich rallying heritage but also reflects the country’s enduring legacy in global motorsport.
