In the face of evolving business landscape, some traders in Mbale town, Vihiga county, have shifted the way of doing business to adapt to the changing business environment.
The ongoing changes, which include reduced physical contact, supply chain disruptions and shifting consumer behavior, have prompted the local entrepreneurs to employ creative solutions in order to gain a competitive edge in the market.
Milka Nabwire, a retail business owner who mainly deals in household items, is one such entrepreneur who has successfully navigated the economic hurdles. Her shop, which previously relied on walk-in customers, saw a decline in sales as consumers preferred transacting on the social media platforms.
“I realized that I couldn’t wait for customers to come to me but I had to go to them,” said Nabwire. “I began promoting my products on social media platforms, especially Facebook marketplace, and started offering home deliveries. This new approach has really helped my business stay afloat.” explained Nabwire.
Nabwire’s online marketing, which applies M-pesa payment method, and home delivery services mirrors an evolving trend among local businesspeople in the region.
According to the Vihiga county National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI), a growing number of small business owners are utilizing e-commerce platforms and digital marketing to connect with customers who prefer shopping from the comfort of home.
The Chamber has also been instrumental in organizing workshops and business forums where local entrepreneurs can share strategies, insights, and solutions to the challenges they face.
Simon Ondeyo, who runs an electronics store in Mbale town, has also harnessed technology in marketing his wares. He says he went online so as to expand the market and has also introduced virtual inquiries for customers.
“The integrated approach has enabled me to serve the physical and online customers and hence the boost in the sales,” he observed.
As the landscape of operating business continues to evolve, traders in Vihiga are demonstrating the aptitude of adaptability, innovation and the harnessing of technology to grow business.
