Uasin Gishu exports 50 in-calf heifers to Nigeria

Uasin Gishu’s livestock industry has received endorsement following the airlifting of 50 in-calf Ayrshire heifers to Nigeria, marking a significant step in the county’s mission to economically empower local farmers while positioning itself as a leader in quality livestock breeding.

The heifers, sourced by Kinanie Agrovet Suppliers from farmers across the county, were flown out of the Eldoret International Airport, marking the county’s first-ever export of quality livestock breeds to West Africa.

The achievement marks a major milestone in Governor Jonathan Bii’s Nguzo Kumi agenda, which he outlined during his campaigns to transform agriculture and economically empower farmers.

“Continued investment in livestock development by the county government aligns with the Governor’s goal to make Uasin Gishu a regional hub for livestock breeding and international trade through a modern, farmer-focused approach to agriculture,” says the county Chief Officer for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Eng. Abraham Kiptalam.

“This is the outcome of the commitment by the county government towards modernised livestock development, focusing on encouraging farmers to manage agriculture as a business,” said Eng. Kiptalam.

He added that the county has subsidised AI services and revamped cattle dips to enhance disease control and extension support.

These efforts, he noted, have improved breed quality and opened up global market opportunities for farmers.

Meanwhile, the Head of Veterinary Services at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed, commended Uasin Gishu’s strict adherence to export standards, noting the importance of maintaining these protocols for continued access to international markets.

He emphasised that while this was the first shipment to Nigeria from the devolved unit, Uasin Gishu has the potential to export dairy breeds to many more countries.

Dr. Sylvester Malel, Director of Kinanie Agrovet Suppliers Ltd., confirmed that several countries across the Middle East, West Africa, and East Africa have expressed interest in importing livestock from Uasin Gishu County.

Dr. Malel said the heifers have met stringent international health and production standards, noting that this reflects the strength of Uasin Gishu County veterinary infrastructure and the commitment by local farmers.
