Uasin Gishu partners with SWIFT to streamline waste management

The Uasin Gishu County government hosted a crucial workshop in partnership with the Sustainable Waste Innovation for a Future in Transition (SWIFT) Programme to validate its draft policy on Sustainable Waste Management.

The session also reviewed related legislation and regulations aimed at streamlining waste management across the county.

The workshop brought together key departments like Health, Trade, Agriculture, Economic Planning, and Physical Planning to establish an institutional framework for coordinated policy implementation.

The departments’ collective input reflects a commitment to sustainable environmental practices and economic development.

The proposed policy promotes a circular economy by transforming how waste is managed, where organic waste will be composted for farming, plastics recycled into industrial products, residual waste turned into briquettes for energy, while e-waste will be repaired and reused.

This initiative supports the county administration’s development agenda under Nguzo number 7, which calls for solid waste management policies that ensure a cleaner, healthier environment.

The initiative also aims at enhancing public health, environmental sustainability and job creation in the county.

The workshop was led by County Executive for Environment, Climate Change, Natural Resources, Water, Irrigation, Sanitation and Energy, Anthony Sitienei and his Chief Officer Mark Some, with technical support from Divina Salim and Vincent Ogaya of SWIFT.

The successful validation marks a major step toward sustainable development, with more collaborative efforts anticipated in the future.
