Vihiga to host Labour Day celebrations at New Kidundu Stadium

Vihiga County is set to host this year’s Labour Day celebrations at the proposed Kidundu Stadium, whose construction is expected to begin in February at a cost of Sh 960 million.

The stadium, which will have a seating capacity of 10,000 people, is expected to be completed in time for the national celebrations. The project will be implemented by the Kenya Defence Forces.

Speaking in Vihiga after holding a consultative meeting with Governor Wilber Ottichillo, county officials and local landowners, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said the government was committed to developing modern sporting and public facilities across the country.

“Kidundu Stadium will be among key facilities being developed to promote sports and host major national events. We want Vihiga to benefit from quality infrastructure like other parts of the country,” said Mudavadi.

He added that the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to decentralising national events and boosting regional development.

“This stadium will open up economic opportunities for the local community and create jobs for our youth,” he said.

Governor Ottichillo assured residents that all preparations had been finalised, noting that land valuation had already been completed.

“We have agreed on the way forward, and what remains is the compensation of the landowners. This will be done in accordance with the law and the agreed terms,” said the governor.

He thanked the landowners for their cooperation and support towards the project.

“We appreciate the understanding shown by the landowners. Their goodwill has made it possible for this important project to move forward smoothly,” he added.

Some of the landowners also welcomed the project, saying it would transform the area.

“This stadium will bring development to our community. We are ready to support the government so that the project can be completed on time,” said Dancan Asega the chairman.

Once completed, Kidundu Stadium is expected to enhance sports development in the county and provide a modern venue for national and county events.
