Youth in Vihiga County are transforming agricultural enterprises through technology and environmental conservation through the national tree-planting initiative.
At the forefront is Forezava Farm in Demesi Ward a youth-led project who have developed gigantic tree nursery growing diverse seedlings which are ready for market in support of the President’s vision of planting 15 billion trees and raise the internationally recommended tree cover in the country.
“Our vision is to combine technology, innovation, and environmental stewardship. By providing quality seedlings and sharing knowledge, we aim to empower communities and create sustainable livelihoods,” said Kevin Makova, Founder and CEO of Forezava.
The initiative employs smart farming techniques, including precision agriculture, automated irrigation systems, and data-driven crop management, which have increased productivity while conserving natural resources.
The youth group is urging government agencies and institutions to source nursery tree seedlings directly from them, linking environmental objectives with youth entrepreneurship.
Residents have commended the initiative. “This is a shining example of how youth creativity can drive both economic growth and environmental conservation,” said a resident in Demesi.
Currently, the county government has provided bags for nursery trees and training for the youth says Kevin the CEO Forezava, Director Environment, Water, Energy, Natural Resources & Climate Change says the county government is yet to purchase more tree nursery trees from the group
Forezava Farm manages 85,000 nursery trees supporting more than 2,500 young people.
The project aims to establish an innovation hub to scale operations and provide a platform for further youth-led agricultural initiatives.
Makova encouraged young people to remain consistent in their efforts, stressing that initiatives started anywhere can succeed with perseverance.
With technology as their tool and sustainability as their mission, the youth of Vihiga are planting seeds for a greener, more prosperous future.
