Water board elects new chair

The Uasin Gishu Rural Water and Sanitation Company (URWASCO) has elected former Tembelio Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Pius Kigen as its new Board Chair.

Kigen, who served as MCA from 2013 to 2022, will steer the company’s governance and provide strategic oversight as URWASCO moves to strengthen water and sanitation services in peri-urban and rural areas.

Speaking during the meeting, Uasin Gishu County Secretary Philip Matelong underscored the importance of water and environmental management in driving the county’s development agenda.

He noted that access to clean water and improved sanitation contributes to better public health outcomes and supports agricultural value addition, positioning water as a key driver of economic growth.

Matelong called on the newly constituted Board to align its operations with the county’s development blueprint in the execution of its mandate.

In his acceptance remarks, Kigen thanked the county leadership and fellow board members for the confidence placed in him.

“I wish to thank the Governor and the Board for the trust they have bestowed upon me. As a board, we are committed to ensuring that residents receive clean, safe and reliable water services,” said Kigen.

He affirmed that the Board will discharge its mandate in accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws governing the water sector, while promoting transparency, accountability and sustainability in all its operations.

URWASCO operates under Nguzo 7 of the Uasin Gishu County development agenda, which prioritises improved access to affordable water and sanitation services, environmental conservation and sustainable management of natural resources.

The company’s mandate includes the management and sustainability of rural and peri-urban water projects to ensure residents benefit from reliable and long-term water supply systems.

The meeting was attended by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water, Environment and Natural Resources Anthony Sitienei; Chief Officer for Water, Irrigation and Sanitation Elijah Koech; Assistant Director for Irrigation and Acting Managing Director of URWASCO Caroline Ngerechi; and other board members.
