The government has stepped up efforts to revitalize mining activities in Vihiga County following a consultative meeting between county leadership and the Principal Secretary for Mining, Harry Kimtai.
The meeting, held in Nairobi, focused on key interventions aimed at boosting mineral resource utilization, enhancing environmental compliance, and supporting artisanal miners.
Among the issues discussed was the revival of the stalled granite factory, with plans underway to secure a new investor after the previous one withdrew due to financial challenges.
The project is expected to create employment opportunities and spur local economic growth once operational.
Progress of the Planet Gold Programme was also reviewed, with officials noting significant milestones achieved so far. The Chambiti training facility has been completed and partially equipped, while local miners have already undergone training on mercury- and cyanide-free gold extraction methods.
The miners have also benefited from a Sh3.2 million grant to support safer and more sustainable mining practices. Commissioning of the facility is expected once installation of all required equipment is complete.
On gold prospecting and licensing, the meeting assessed ongoing operations by firms including Shanta Gold, Kitigu Gold Processing, and Suyan Wei Company, with emphasis placed on adherence to regulatory frameworks.
Concerns were also raised over abandoned quarries that pose environmental and safety risks. The Ministry has since deployed a team to map all unrehabilitated sites to facilitate appropriate action.
Meanwhile, sand harvesting remains a devolved function, with authorities reiterating that licensing will strictly follow the law. Operators will be required to present valid approvals from the National Environment Management Authority and provide compliance bonds before being issued with permits.
The Cabinet Secretary for Mining is expected to visit Vihiga County on April 24 to further engage stakeholders and assess progress on ongoing initiatives.
