ODM holds retreat in Mombasa to resolve wrangles, strategize

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has unveiled a series of resolutions aimed at revitalizing the party and preparing for the 2027 General Election, even as it grapples with internal divisions following the death of its founding leader, Raila Odinga.

The 20-year-old party has in recent months experienced factional disagreements, mainly between the Linda Ground and Linda Mwananchi groups, raising concerns over unity and cohesion ahead of the next polls.

In response, ODM’s top leadership, including the National Executive Council, Parliamentary Group, Council of Governors, and Cabinet Secretaries affiliated with the party, convened in Mombasa for a three-day retreat to chart its strategic direction and foster unity.

Speaking during the second day of the retreat, Acting Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo said ODM remains focused on forming the next government, either independently or through a coalition.

“We have made a conscious decision to pursue reforms from within government structures. ODM will be present where decisions affecting our people are made, so we can influence them positively,” she said.

Omanyo emphasized that the party remains committed to democratic processes in its quest for power, noting that its strategy does not involve street protests but structured political engagement.

She also revealed that the party plans to engage the government over the release of Sh12 billion owed to ODM under the Political Parties Fund to facilitate its operations and grassroots activities.

Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati reassured members regarding the absence of Party Leader Dr Oburu Odinga at the retreat, stating that he was engaged in an official function abroad. He urged members to remain united and avoid deepening existing divisions.

“We are not a party that excludes others. ODM is built on unity, and we welcome all members, including those who did not attend this retreat,” Arati said, extending an olive branch to those aligned with the Linda Mwananchi faction.

Three former ODM officials now serving as Cabinet Secretaries in the broad-based government also attended the retreat, signaling continued loyalty to the party, despite their roles in government.

National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi said their presence was meant to demonstrate unity and reaffirm their allegiance to the party leadership.

“We must support and work under the party leadership. When it comes to party matters, they guide us, and we remain committed to ODM under the leadership of Dr Oburu Odinga,” Mbadi stated.

Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho echoed the sentiments, saying their participation in the retreat reflects their enduring connection to the party.

“Before our appointment to the Cabinet, we were ODM members, and that has not changed. We remain committed to the party both in and out of government,” Joho said.

He added that their positions in government will enable them to channel key issues raised by the party to the Cabinet for consideration and action.

The retreat is also focusing on strengthening party structures, identifying potential candidates, and revitalizing its youth and women leagues, to enhance grassroots mobilization ahead of the elections.
