Murang’a County compensates residents affected by landslides and other disasters

The Murang’a County Government has compensated victims of various disasters through the Murang’a County Emergency Fund.

The compensation exercise held at the Murang’a County headquarters was led by Deputy Governor Stephen Munania who issued cheques worth a total of Sh520,000 to 52 families affected by landslides, fire outbreaks, and other calamities.

The Deputy Governor noted that the county has consistently supported residents impacted by disasters. “Several months ago, we also supported traders whose shops were destroyed during demonstrations,” he said.

Munania explained that beneficiaries were identified based on need through a structured vetting process. “Those selected were vetted by the National Government through the area chiefs and assistant chiefs,” said Munania.

He added that the assessment process also involved the Kenya Red Cross, which verified the reported incidents and compiled findings to confirm that the disasters had occurred.

Speaking at the function, Muguru Ward MCA Moses Muchiri said the county has enacted policies and regulations to ensure that victims of disasters receive assistance from the County government.

“To qualify for support the affected residents are required to provide a letter from their area chief, a copy of their national identification card and photographs showing the damage caused by the disaster,” he said.

Muchiri further noted that the County Assembly has increased the allocation to the Emergency Fund in the current financial year’s budget to strengthen the county’s response to emergencies.

Among the beneficiaries was Full Gospel Reverend Joel Gachaki, who said a landslide caused the church wall to collapse, thus destroying the church building.

Gachaki thanked the County Government for extending support to those affected by disasters.
