A group of matatu owners in Migori County is in uproar over alleged extortion by law enforcement officers, who are demanding daily payments in exchange for allowing them to operate.
Despite reaching an agreement with the county government regarding license fees, the Sacco owners claim that these rogue officers have been demanding an additional Sh50 per day per bus station, even after parting with the required fee of Sh80 at toll station, which stretches from the Isebania border, Migori, Awendo, and Rongo.
According to Jared Oketch, the chairperson of one of the matatu Saccos in Migori, the county government park officials have been clamping their cars for failing to pay a fee that they demand over and above the official fee.
Oketch said that on various occasions they have been forced to pay between Sh3,500 to Sh10,000 to get their impounded cars back.
The matatu Sacco operators also want the county government to introduce a monthly fee of between 2,500 and sh3,500 instead of the daily Sh80 that is paid for every bus station.
