The government is set to establish a new Coast guard base in Usenge, Bondo constituency as part of the efforts to curb insecurity in Lake Victoria, Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Kipchumba Murkomen has said.
Murkomen who was addressing a press conference in Siaya ahead of the Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Siaya said that the government was further working on modalities to solve perennial conflicts in the Lake which is brought about by competition for resources.
This, he said, was being done through the joint cooperation framework between Kenya and Uganda.
The CS said that neither Kenya nor Uganda encourages harassment of innocent citizens going about their duties in the Lake, adding that the Kenya Coast Guards have on several occasion arrested foreigners who trespass to the country.
Murkomen said smuggling of drugs and illicit liquor across the Lake was one of the serious national security challenges.
He further lamented that the county was also re-known with chang’aa distillation and unregulated mining.
The Interior CS, who was flanked by deputy inspector general of police, Gilbert Masengeli and acting Siaya county commissioner, Robert Ng’etich, called for concerted efforts to fight the challenges to security.
