The Kiambu County Government has commenced the upgrading of the Riabai Polytechnic Sports Ground in a project aimed at enhancing safety, accessibility, and community relations.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication, follows a successful site assessment led by Chief Officer for Sports, Mr Godfrey Masolo, and Chief Officer for Youth Affairs, Communication and PR, Dr Mercy Njoki
The project will focus on three key areas, fencing the ground to enhance security, installing two access gates for improved entry and exit, and erecting a high ball-stop net to prevent balls from entering nearby residential areas. The assessment team was joined by Riabai Ward MCA, Hezron Gachui, who pledged his full support for the initiative.
Mr Masolo said the improvements will make the facility safer and more inclusive for both students and the surrounding community.
“Our young people deserve decent and secure playing facilities,” he said. “By fencing and improving access, we’re ensuring this ground becomes a safe and welcoming space for sports.”
He added that the ball-stop net would help minimize conflicts with nearby residents.
“This will allow games to continue without disturbing the neighbourhood,” he noted.
Dr Njoki said the project aligns with the county’s broader sports development agenda as outlined in the Annual Development Plan.
“We’re investing in our youth by creating spaces that nurture their potential. Sports can be a powerful tool for empowerment, discipline, and unity,” she said.
Gachui welcomed the move, saying the facility will boost youth engagement and strengthen community spirit.
“This ground has always been a hub for local talent. The upgrade will allow our young people to train and compete in a safe environment,” he said. “We’ll work with the county to maintain it.”
According to the department, fencing and gate installation will be completed in the coming months, followed by the ball-stop net. Once finished, the improved ground will host local tournaments, school matches, and youth training sessions.
The project forms part of Kiambu County’s plan to modernise sports facilities and strengthen youth development across all wards, providing young people with safe, vibrant spaces to nurture their talents.
