The national government through the National Irrigation Board (NIB) will desilt and rehabilitate Sin’ore dam in Keiyo North at a cost of Sh80 million.
The Keiyo North MP Adams Kipsanai said the dam will supply water to approximately 4,000 households for both domestic use and irrigation.
Speaking during the handing over of the dam to the contractor, the legislator appealed to residents to use the water to grow food to contribute to food security and also improve their lives economically.
The contractor Alex Miriti said the rehabilitations is expected to be completed within 18 months but said he will work hard to ensure that it is completed earlier.
He said the scope of works includes the construction of elevated tanks to ensure that water flows to the farms with the force of gravity and a further 12 kilometres of piping to supply water to the beneficiaries.
The MP said this was the fourth dam being rehabilitated in the constituency citing Etoo, Yokot and Emsoo saying they will spur growth in both the agricultural and dairy sectors.
Rosebella Kimaiyo expressed joy for the rehabilitation of the project saying it will save women time spent going to look for the precious commodity thus freeing them to engage in other development activities.
She said with water they will engage in horticultural farming which will give them money to meet their financial expenditure, especially the payment of school fees for their children.
“With the sale of horticultural products like vegetables and tomatoes among others, we will be able to pay school fees comfortably without resorting to harambees or bursaries,” she said.
