Youths and women groups in North Mugirango Constituency have received cheques worth Sh 1 million from Uwezo Fund to boost their business enterprises.
North Mugirango Member of Parliament, Joash Nyamoko, who officiated the ceremony on Wednesday at Nyakenimo village, encouraged residents to focus on income-generating activities as the most reliable way to improve and sustain their livelihoods. He issued cheques of Sh50,000 each to 20 registered groups.
“In the current tough economic times, one cannot afford to sit idle or rely on handouts from politicians, friends, or relatives. Everyone is striving to make ends meet. These groups have made a prudent decision to strengthen their business ventures and sustain their livelihoods,” MP Nyamoko said.
He further emphasized that the government has introduced several funding models for groups willing to engage in economic activities. Vulnerable members of society, particularly youths, women, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), are given priority to access these funds and become economically independent.
“Be informed that Uwezo Fund is a revolving fund. Groups must promptly embark on their business plans or increase their stock so they can return this interest-free money as legally stipulated, allowing new groups to benefit,” MP Nyamoko reminded the beneficiaries.
During the event, the MP also officially opened residential houses for security officers at Nyakenimo police post. The initiative is expected to enhance security in the area and enable officers to execute their duties effectively, knowing they have decent, secure accommodation courtesy of the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF).
“Nyakenimo and Eaka areas have experienced serious insecurity, including theft of farmers’ coffee produce. Housing security officers on-site will curb coffee cherry theft, which has been rampant, and protect local livelihoods,” MP Nyamoko assured.
The area Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Joyce Gitau, thanked the MP for the initiative, noting that it will boost security officers’ morale while safeguarding farmers’ coffee crops.
MP Nyamoko was accompanied by fellow legislators, including MP Zaheer Jhanda of Nyaribari Chache Constituency, Kisii women MP Doris Aburi and her Nyamira counterpart Jerusha Momanyi. Other local leaders also attended, expressing support for the current leadership under President William Ruto, whose development agenda continues to prioritize community projects across the country.
The Uwezo Fund initiative aligns with broader government efforts to empower local communities, create sustainable livelihoods, and provide targeted support to vulnerable groups. By combining financial assistance with infrastructural improvements, such as housing for security personnel, the program aims to address both economic and social challenges simultaneously.
The ceremony underscored the importance of community-driven development and highlighted the role of elected leaders in facilitating access to resources, supporting entrepreneurship, and enhancing public safety in rural constituencies.
