It was joy for more than 2,000 households from Langas area, Kapseret Sub County in Uasin Gishu on Saturday morning after they received various foods stuffs from a business operator Florence Akinyi, alias mama daughter.
The foodstuff included wheat flour, sugar, salt and others, to help support the vulnerable members of the community to enjoy during this festive season. The donation went to vulnerable households including the elderly and the People with Disabilities.
Speaking at Langas primary grounds when she donated the foodstuffs, Akinyi emphasized the need of taking care of the needy in the society, noting that is one way to have a nation which values community solidarity and dignity, aligning with constitutional principles of service and inclusion for all citizens.
Mama Daughter revealed that many members of the community especially the PWDs and the elderly have been neglected by their families as she called on people to support each other with the little they have, citing tough economic situation faced by families particularly from the slum areas.
“I discovered that there are so many vulnerable people in this area of Langas which is a slum. That is why I decided to bring them these foodstuffs to help them celebrate early Christmas like others,” she noted.
Susan Mbone, a 25-year-old mother living with disability, complained that they have always been neglected and despised in the community as a burden, making them live under deplorable conditions without basic necessities such as food and shelter.
“We are very grateful to well-wishers like Mama Daughter for this food, at least today we will enjoy decent meals like others from wealthy families,” exclaimed Mbone.
Simon Kimimia a 40-year-old PWD from the Langas area said that many of them are suffering silently due to stigma and lack of support in terms of food and other basic needs.
“Some parents fear revealing their children’s disability status in order to ask for help from well-wishers, we call on you to hold our hands and support us to live a dignified life like others,” he said.
