Chiefs and their assistants in Makueni County have been warned of dire consequences if found holding kangaroo courts to settle sexual offence cases outside the legal system.
County Commissioner (CC) Khalif Abdullai said any administrator implicated in such illegal settlements would be prosecuted, stressing that sexual offence and gender-based violence (GBV) cases must strictly follow the due process of law.
Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Kikima Secondary School, Abdullai said chiefs and sub-county security teams will be held personally accountable if cases of defilement or GBV occur under their jurisdiction.
“I want to caution chiefs and the 10 sub-county security teams that they will be held culpable if defilement or GBV cases occur in their areas. Anyone conducting kangaroo courts to settle sexual offences will face prosecution for negligence and failure to perform their duties,” warned the administrator.
He emphasized that there will be no more out-of-court settlements of sexual offences and urged administrators to ensure all offenders are arrested and charged in accordance with the law.
Abdullai further appealed to members of the public to support government efforts by confidentially reporting cases and providing information that could lead to the arrest of offenders.
He assured residents of enhanced security during the festive season, adding that police were alert and that a crackdown on illicit brews was underway to maintain law and order across the county.
