One killed, others injured in Kisumu–Bondo road crash

By C, KNA

One person was killed and several others seriously injured Wednesday morning after two vehicles collided head-on at Kondigo area along the Kisumu–Bondo road.

Confirming the incident, Nyanza Regional Traffic commander Peter Maina said the accident occurred at about 10 am and involved an Isuzu FRR lorry and a Toyota matatu operating under the Eton Sacco shuttle.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the lorry was travelling from Bondo towards Kisumu, when its driver lost control, while descending a slope.

The vehicle veered off its lane and collided head-on with the oncoming matatu, whose driver attempted to avoid astray cow that had suddenly entered the highway from a feeder road.

A female passenger in the matatu, identified as Eunice Achieng Adoyo, 38, sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot.

Several other passengers were injured in the crash, with some sustaining fractures and head injuries.

The injured were rushed to Kombewa sub-county hospital for initial treatment, before being referred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) for specialized care.

Other victims were reportedly taken to different hospitals that were yet to be established by police.

Both vehicles sustained extensive damage to their front sections, with windscreens shattered.

The body of the deceased was taken to JOOTRH mortuary, where it is being preserved awaiting a postmortem examination.

Maina said investigations into the accident were ongoing, even as police renewed calls on motorists to exercise caution during this festive season, especially along the busy highways and in areas prone to stray animals.
