Residents of Kamwangu area in Muthambi Sub-County turned out in large numbers on Thursday for a public baraza convened by County Commissioner David Gitonga, alongside security agencies, as authorities vowed to tackle rising cases of child defilement and illegal alcohol.
Addressing the crowd, Gitonga expressed deep concern over reports of girls below 18 years getting pregnant. He warned that anyone found responsible for defiling minors would face swift legal action.
“The government will not tolerate the defilement of children. Anyone responsible for impregnating underage girls will be arrested and prosecuted,” Gitonga said.
He urged residents to report such cases immediately, stressing that protecting children is a shared societal responsibility.
The County Commissioner also announced a crackdown on illicit alcohol, which he said fuels social problems and economic stagnation in the area.
“Illegal alcohol will be eliminated. Those involved in its production and sale will face the full force of the law. Alcohol will not help you develop,” he cautioned.
Gitonga encouraged residents to embrace productive economic activities, including farming and environmental conservation. He highlighted the importance of planting fruit trees to provide income, ensure food security, and protect the environment.
“We must plant trees, especially fruit trees, and protect our environment. This will improve our livelihoods and secure our future,” he said.
Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander Zachaeus Ng’eno affirmed that members of the public can report defilement and child abuse cases, even if parents or guardians are complacent.
“The law allows concerned individuals to report. Once a complaint is made, action will follow,” Ng’eno said.
Prof. Erastus Njoka, former Vice Chancellor of Chuka University who also addressed the gathering, called for transformative development in the county. He announced plans to expand water access across Tharaka Nithi, aiming to boost livelihoods and support economic activities.
Njoka urged residents to elect visionary county leaders and emphasized the importance of education. He warned students against drug abuse, adding: “Education is key, and our children must remain focused. Drugs will only destroy their future.”
