Youth for Sustainable World (YSW) has embarked on a journey to offer life skills at the primary school level to improve the lives of young people through adolescent and youth-focused programmes.
Speaking in Rongo town, Migori county during a meeting with various Heads of Institutions (HoI), the Youth for Sustainable World Official, Lee Oluch, said that the organisation will mentor teachers on life skills programmes to enable them pass the same skills to pupils in their respective schools.
“We will train teachers on life skills, who will then impart their learners, while at the same time mentoring peer educators, who will also train fellow students to achieve maximum results,” said Oluch.
He said that life skills education will enhance the abilities of learners to address challenges facing young people like Gender Based Violence (GBV), teenage pregnancy, school absenteeism and dropouts.
According to Oluch, the head teachers will help to draft a work plan and to identify mentor teachers for implementation of the project in their various schools.
“We aim to ensure this life skill programme is replicated in other schools across Migori County to empower our young ones with the necessary life skills like being interactive and more assertive to cope and tackle their challenges,” he said.
Martin Omollo, head of institution in one of the comprehensive schools in Rongo Sub-County, said the programme will instill self-esteem, self-awareness, communication skills and good decision-making skills among the young people.
Omollo said majority of pupils at the primary and junior secondary schools are at the adolescent stage, and it was equally important to nurture them properly through initiatives like life skills and youth-focused programmes to groom them into better youths.
YSW focuses on creating a supportive environment, advancing gender equality and fostering access to Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services to empower young people
