Police in Isiolo have recovered 18 illegal firearms and arrested six suspects in an ongoing security operation.
The weapons and assorted ammunition were displayed to journalists and security intelligence officers at the Isiolo Police Station, raising the total number of firearms recovered so far to 23.
Isiolo County Police Commander Isaac Sang said the cache includes four M4, seven AK-47s, three G3, one M16 and one British-made rifle. All the firearms were found to be in good working condition and were recovered alongside ammunition.
Sang urged members of the public to voluntarily surrender any illegal firearms in their possession, noting that authorities believe more than 500 illegal guns remain in civilian hands within Isiolo County.
He warned that the security operation will be intensified and that individuals who fail to surrender illegal weapons will be arrested and prosecuted.
The six suspects arrested in connection with the recovered firearms remain in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court upon completion of investigations and processing.
Bernard Okwiri, the Isiolo Deputy County Commissioner, said that despite the ongoing operation, there have been attempts by bandits to steal livestock but they were warded off by security agencies.
He assured residents of total security adding that officers have successfully controlled safety of lives and property which is the core duty of the government.
