Manchester United fans secured a memorable victory over their Arsenal counterparts after edging them 5-4 in a penalty shootout during the SportPesa Xperience rematch at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.
Tens of thousands of fans filled Nyayo Stadium, turning the venue into a sea of red as supporters of the two English Premier League clubs renewed their competitions, while hundreds of thousands more followed the action online.
The victory extended Manchester United fans’ unbeaten run against their Arsenal counterparts to two matches, following their 3-2 win in the first leg in June.
With the stadium packed to capacity in a blaze of red from both camps, the highly anticipated encounter saw Manchester United fans take an early lead through comedians Jian and Yasin, who combined to catch the Arsenal side off guard and put their team ahead in the first half.
In response, Arsenal fans regrouped after normal time, with Machwani and Telvin Paul scoring to level the match and force a penalty shootout.
Despite the Gunners being the better side for large stretches of the match, United proved more clinical when it mattered, eventually winning the shootout 5-4, with captain Eric Omondi stepping up to convert the decisive spot-kick.
Speaking after the match, SportPesa Chief Executive Officer Captain Ronald Karauri said the event was designed to offer fans an experience beyond the football pitch.
“Today was about giving our fans an experience that goes beyond the pitch. Whether you support Arsenal or Manchester United or you are a neutral, the fans walked out of the stadium having shared something unforgettable together,” said Karauri.
The CEO added: “That’s what SportPesa Xperience is all about, bringing fans closer to the game and closer to each other.”
The Manchester United fans’ captain, Eric Omondi, credited his team’s composure under pressure for the victory. “We knew Arsenal would come for us, and they did. But when it went to penalties, we trusted ourselves and got the job done. Back-to-back wins, that’s what champions do,” said Omondi.
Arsenal fans’ Captain, ‘Useful Idioty’ was proud of his side’s performance despite the defeat. “We dominated large parts of that game and deserved more. Penalties can be cruel, but I’m proud of how we fought back. We’ll be ready for the next one,” he said.
The event also recognized Kenyan football legends Francis Onyiso and Dennis Oliech for their contribution to the sport, with Oliech, popularly known as ‘The Menace’, receiving a goat from Eric Omondi as a symbolic gesture celebrating his celebrated stature in Kenyan football.
Lawrence Olum, the only Kenyan to have won a Major League Soccer (MLS) title, was also recognised during the event.
The rematch caps another successful chapter in the SportPesa Xperience calendar, reaffirming the brand’s commitment to fan-first football activations across Kenya.
