Three suspects have been arrested following fresh land and boundary clashes along the Nkararo-Enoretet border in Transmara West, Narok County that erupted over the weekend.
Confirming the arrests, Narok County Commissioner, Kipkech Lotiatia said a massive manhunt was in progress for more suspects who have gone into hiding following the scuffles.
The clashes have prompted the deployment of security officers to the affected areas as authorities move to contain further violence and establish what triggered the latest confrontation.
Mr. Lotiatia confirmed that investigations had commenced, with security agencies conducting operations along the troubled border.
“Investigations have been launched into the clashes, as a security operation gets underway along the volatile border,” he noted.
Speaking at Nkararo in Transmara West Sub-County during a security patrol in the area, the County Commissioner however ruled out claims that the incident was sparked off by land disputes, cattle rustling or livestock theft, indicating that preliminary investigations indicated that the incident arose from a minor personal disagreement that was later amplified through rumors.
He said security personnel had conducted intensified patrols in the area for the past four days following reports of youths chasing and fighting each other while using arrows, clubs and stones.
Lotiatia commended security teams from Transmara West and Transmara South for containing the situation, saying the area was currently calm and secure.
The renewed violence has rekindled concerns over the long-standing unresolved land dispute involving the Irwashi Nkishu and Isiria communities with residents saying that repeated confrontations have continued to put lives at risk.
The border has experienced recurring confrontations, with competition over land and other resources contributing to tensions between communities.
Local residents have called for the identification and resolution of disputed boundaries to prevent further clashes.
The CC described those involved as hooligans and criminals who had no genuine reason to engage in violence, adding that the three suspects would face charges of incitement and spreading false rumors.
“The conflict is not about land. There were no cattle theft and no encroachment on anybody’s farm. It is simply senseless behavior, and the dragnet we have set up will continue to catch those responsible,” said Lotiatia.
He said investigations were ongoing to establish the actual circumstances surrounding the violence and apprehend other individuals suspected of instigating or participating in the unrest.
Narok County leaders through Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu have called for immediate calm and dialogue following the skirmishes.
A high-level team led by Governor Ntutu visited the troubled region. They met with local elders and security teams to lower the tension.
During the meeting, political leaders pledged to foster harmony and address the root causes of the skirmishes.
Governor Ole Ntutu asked the national security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to restore order and prevent further loss of life.
“I condemn these unfortunate incidents. We are asking the security personnel to enhance security and prioritize safety of people across the border,” he said.
The Governor urged the affected families to remain calm and united as investigations continue. He emphasized the need for restraint, warning that retaliatory actions could further escalate tensions in an already fragile security environment.
He emphasized the need for dialogue, equitable resource sharing and intervention from relevant authorities to prevent further violence.
“This was a deeply painful and unfortunate incident that has left families devastated and a community in grief,” he said.
Investigators are also expected to establish the events that preceded the clashes and determine whether other factors contributed to the confrontation.
Authorities are monitoring the situation along the border as efforts continue to prevent additional attacks.
The latest incident has also renewed calls for dialogue involving government officials, community leaders and residents to address the longstanding dispute.
