Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary (CS), Opiyo Wandayi, has launched a Last Mile Connectivity Programme (LMCP), under the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) project in Lwala Rabuor village in Nyatike Sub-county.
Speaking at Lwala Comprehensive School, CS Wandayi noted that parts of Nyatike have lacked electricity since independence, making the initiative a long-overdue milestone.
The initial Phase funds a 600-meter power line extension to connect local households to the national grid, with plans to expand coverage to additional homes in subsequent phases in Nyatike.
“This Phase will, that is set for completion within two months, cover up to a 600-meter power line to connect households and institutions, as other households would be catered for in the second Phase,” said Wandayi.
The CS also disclosed that Nyatike Sub-county has been allocated close to Sh340 million to connect more than 2,500 households to electricity, with Migori County receiving Sh2.3 billion to connect more than 20,000 households across the eight constituencies in this Financial Year.
He applauded the National government for prioritising the region and emphasized that reliable electricity will transform the community by boosting the local economy and improving educational outcomes through digital learning and extended study hours.
The Official added that the power project in the region will advance President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) of inclusive growth, equitable development, and shared prosperity for all.
CS Wandayi, who also launched a community tree planting drive at Lwala Rabuor Comprehensive School in North Kadem Ward-Nyatike, urged residents of Migori County to reelect President William Ruto for the development agenda his done in the region.
He called upon the Migori residents to re-elect the President, to ensure continuity of development in the Nyanza region.
Migori County Governor, Ochilo Ayacko, who accompanied CS Wandayi, praised the strong collaboration between the National and County governments for driving significant development in the region.
In attendance was Nyatike Member of Parliament (MP), Tom Odege, who echoed his sentiments, commending the CS for delivering grid electricity to Nyatike Sub-county after years of delay.
