Uasin Gishu County’s environmental department has stepped up efforts to deliver a cleaner, greener Eldoret city as national celebrations for Mazingira Day and Mashujaa Day draw near.
County Executive Committee Member for Environment, Climate Change, Natural Resources, Water, Irrigation, Sanitation and Energy, Anthony Cheruiyot Sitienei, on Thursday gathered environment officers for a coordination meeting aimed at tightening preparations for the two events.
Mazingira Day will be marked on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at RTS Barracks, while Mashujaa Day follows on October 20.
“The Mazingira event falls squarely in our department and requires all of us to get involved,” Sitienei told the officers.
He stressed the need for clear team leadership and close coordination so that every preparatory activity runs smoothly, ahead of the main celebration.
County Director for Environment, Abigael Kibet, backed the call for a stronger organisation. She directed officers to appoint team leaders for each group handling build-up activities and singled out the arboretum clean-up as a key departmental responsibility.
“Clean-up activities have taken centre stage across the city and its outskirts,” Kibet said, adding, “We need greater commitment from officers to ensure this initiative achieves its objectives.”
She urged the teams to strengthen collaboration and dedicate themselves fully to the clean-up campaign over the next 10 days, adding that the effort should not end with the celebrations.
“Our work must go beyond the immediate events and grow into a sustainable programme that keeps the city clean in the months ahead,” she said.
The department is expected to intensify clean-up and conservation drives in various parts of the city as it works to deliver a successful Mazingira Day and build positive momentum towards Mashujaa Day.
