A boda boda group in Kasipul constituency, Homa Bay county has paid fees for 122 needy students to enable them to continue with their education.
The riders’ group dubbed East Kamagak Boda boda Sacco raised over Sh2.8million to support education of children whose parents were members of the Sacco.
The group’s chairperson Alex Ogoro said that the members were also being supported to build houses.
He said they received a grant of Sh1 million from the Homa Bay county government which has supported their activities.
“Apart from the members’ savings, we also received support from Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo and other friends who gave a major boost to our kitty” Ogoro said.
He said among the beneficiaries were 90 students undertaking technical courses in various tertiary institutions within Homa Bay county.
“Supporting education of our children is a top priority. We intend to use the group to transform the lives of members,” Ogoro said.
Speaking on Sunday during their Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Odowa village in Kasipul constituency, Ogoro said over Sh480,000 have been disbursed as loans to the members.
The Sacco is also supporting members to undertake farming activities such as livestock keeping, crop production and making of sunflower cooking oil.
“We have ensured that all members are engaged in income-generating activities to fight poverty,” Ogoro said.
Patricia Atieno and Robert Owange who are members of the Sacco said they have benefited immensely since they joined last year.
Atieno said through the support from the Sacco, she had bought a motorbike and opened a second-hand clothes (Mitumba) business.
Kasipul constituency Cooperative Officer Beatrice Gogo urged the Sacco members to save more to boost the revolving fund.
She also urged Sacco officials to maintain high integrity as they discharge their duties to increase trust from members.
