Construction of Child Care Centre to begin soon

The County Government of Busia has handed over a one-acre parcel of land to the Collaborative Centre for Gender and Development (CCGD), a non-governmental organization, for the establishment of a child care facility and situation room.

The upgraded childcare facility that will be constructed at Busia Agricultural Training Centre is expected to provide high-quality services to the local residents.

The facility is expected to serve over 1,000 women across the county by enabling them to leave their children in safe hands while attending to other matters.

The representatives of the Collaborative Centre for Gender and Development, Grace Kathau and Sharon Ngaira, expressed their commitment to ensuring that the project is successful.

Ngaira stated that the facility will operate as a public entity using a developmental model supported by strong leadership from the county executive.

She added that CCGD will sustain the centre for three years, after which the County Government will take over the responsibility of supporting its staff.

Busia County Chief Officer for Gender Affairs Pasilisa Barasa stated that the facility will empower women, especially teen mothers, by providing them with the opportunity to return to school or engage in other income-generating activities.

Barasa added that a situation room will be established alongside the childcare facility to provide essential support to survivors of gender-based violence, especially counselling services for both adults and children.

“The facility will also serve as a referral point for those affected by GBV,” she said, adding that a toll-free helpline will also be set up to ensure immediate assistance.

The organisation is currently operating a small child Care Centre in Busia town whose capacity needs to be expanded to support more women.
