The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) leadership have been urged to scrutinise some of its officers who are allegedly being used by politicians to settle political scores.
According to some residents of Gem constituency, a recent summon by the EACC to the Kisumu city manager, Abala Wanga over alleged fake education certificates was nothing but an attempt by some people to ensure that the manager does not fulfil his wish to join politics.
Addressing the media in Siaya town, the residents, led by Samuel Odhiambo and Isaac Onjala urged the EACC chairman, David Oginde and the Chief Executive Officer to reign in on some of their errant officials who have turned into errand boys for some well-connected individuals.
“Kenyans respect you. There are some of your officers who are destroying your reputation,” said Onjala adding that EACC must keep off politically motivated cases if it was to win the people’s support.
Samuel Odhiambo who hails from South Gem said it was in public domain that the city manager attended local schools before proceeding to Kampala International University, adding that even some of his former classmates can attest to this.
“I know Wanga has relevant educational and professional certificates,” said Odhiambo.
His sentiments were supported by Michael Okeyo who wondered why it has taken over 30years for the government to question the city manager’s credentials.
“From Uganda, Wanga worked with the national government and has been working closely with Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o, the Kisumu governor for years,” he said.
Okeyo said the hullaballoo about the manager’s credentials began last year when he declared intention to join politics.
An elder, Tobias Olang’o Nyabola urged EACC and other institutions mandated to look into lifestyle issues to be cautious when handling some matters.
“We have legal systems that should be exhausted before some information that can be scandalous are leaked out,” said Nyabola.
On Wednesday, the city manager presented himself before the EACC to answer to alleged forgery claims.
