FCDC convenes Isiolo workshop to bolster pastoral governance

The Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC) has convened a two-day workshop in Isiolo County aimed at strengthening the capacity and coordination of County Pastoral Associations (CPAs) and Community Land Management Committees (CLMCs).

The forum, held under FCDC’s RANGE Programme, was officially opened by Isiolo County Commissioner David Kiprop Thursday in a local hotel in Isiolo.

During the forum, Kiprop underscored the need for stronger institutions to support sustainable pastoral livelihoods.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders ranging from pastoralist associations from Isiolo, Samburu, and Marsabit counties to address gaps in pastoral governance and enhance institutional resilience.

Discussions are focusing on reviewing the progress and challenges facing CPAs, assessing the status of community land registration, and clarifying the legal roles of CLMCs under the Community Land Act.

Participants are also exploring opportunities for resource mobilization and partnerships to strengthen support for pastoral communities.

The deliberations have further linked natural resource governance to peacebuilding, disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, and social protection, which are critical to livelihoods in arid and semi-arid areas.

FCDC noted that the workshop forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance coordination and promote inclusive governance frameworks for sustainable development in marginalised regions.
CPAs and CLMCs play a central role in managing communal land and resources but continue to face challenges related to capacity, legal clarity, and funding.

The workshop is expected to generate actionable recommendations to inform policy and improve community-led land management practices.
