Fishermen in Homa Bay county receive a grant

It was all smiles for members of a fishermen’s Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (Sacco) in Homa Bay County after they received a grant of Sh 5 million from President William Ruto.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga who presented the money on Wednesday noted that President Ruto promised the fishermen the support during his tour of the county ahead of ‘Madaraka Day’ celebrations held in the county.

She said the money was expected to boost the fishermen’s access to affordable credit.

The governor presented the money Wednesday on behalf of President Ruto at Governor’s Park in Homa Bay Town.

“This money is expected to empower fishermen so that they can grow their trade,” Wanga said.

She told residents that this was proof that President Ruto fulfills his promises and that they should shun lies being peddled that the government was not delivering.

“There are some people who peddle lies that the President does not fulfill his pledges. The money I am presenting to these fishermen and other projects in our county confirm that he fulfills them,” Wanga said.

The governor said her government had also supported the Sacco with 1 million shillings.

She said the funds will help fishermen purchase fishing gear.

“Fishing is a very important sector in our economy. I urge the fishermen to use the money prudently to boost the sector.” Wanga said.

She said her administration was committed to improving fisheries infrastructure through the establishment of fish landing sites and value addition for fish.

Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga said the Sacco will open other opportunities for the fishermen to obtain funds.

Homa Bay County Beach Management Network Chairman Edward Oremo said the funds are going to make their Sacco more vibrant.

“We are grateful for the financial support. The funds will enable us to achieve goals,” Oremo said.
