Government pledges inclusive, equitable, and lifelong learning opportunities.

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has assured the public of the government’s commitment to implement the globally sustainable development goals in order to provide inclusive, equitable education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Machogu stated that the government has continued to implement policies and strategies toward the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a speech read on his behalf by the Higher Education Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, during the fourth African Curriculum Conference, the CS emphasized the place of technology in today’s education as a driver in providing lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Machogu stated that countries in Africa have continued to address the inequities and inequalities in the provision of education and the conference’s theme, ‘Learning for Sustainable Futures: Connections between Curriculums, Cognition, and Context, was timely.

“The COVID-19 pandemic caused a global learning crisis and according to the Sustainable Development Goals report of 2022, over 24 million learners will never return to school,” said Machogu.

He noted that the pandemic also provided means for the improvement of the learning environment and enhancement of remote learning.

The CS said that on matters of inclusivity, the same report indicates that 25% of learners lack electricity, drinking water and good sanitation, while another 50% lack computers and internet connectivity.

“The conference will provide opportunities for the participants to share knowledge, experience and best practices for the common challenges facing the education sector in the continent,” highlighted Machogu.

The three-day conference is organized by the African Curriculum Association and hosted by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in partnership with UNESCO and the Ministry of Education, among other partners.

Ghana’s Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwumi, remarked that Africans need to transform the education sector by being innovative through research and identifying the best opportunities.

“We must understand that change is a gradual process and that it is possible.  Consequently, we must be determined to deal with the current challenges we are facing in the education sector,” Adutwumi said.
