Tharaka Nithi governor Muthomi Njuki has unveiled a maternal health initiative, aimed at transforming prenatal and postnatal care in the area.
Speaking during the Season 11 of certified seeds distribution event at Gitareni’s Chief’s camp in Mugwe Ward, Njuki urged all expectant mothers to register with local health facilities, as part of a countywide data collection and planning exercise.
The initiative, which will soon become official county policy, focuses on improving service delivery by gathering accurate data on pregnancies and births.
He emphasized the importance of planning, saying that registration will help the county government ensure every mother and child receives the care they deserve.
Highlighting critical health windows, Njuki pointed out that the most vulnerable stages for a baby are during pregnancy and in the first five months after birth.
“There is a need for expectant mothers to attend clinic visits at least four times before delivery to ensure a seamless delivery process when time comes,” said Njuki.
In a bold move to encourage hospital deliveries, the governor announced a new incentive that every mother who gives birth in a health facility will receive Sh1,000.
This, he said, will not only promote safe deliveries, but also help the county track births more accurately and plan resources effectively.
“This is not just about the money; it’s about building a healthy generation. A healthy mother means a healthy baby, and that means a healthier future for Tharaka Nithi,” Njuki said.
The governor also used the occasion to highlight the success of the certified seed distribution program, confirming that certified seeds have now been distributed across all wards in the county.
This agricultural support, he added, combined with health reforms, will ensure both food security and healthier communities in Tharaka Nithi.
