Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo has expressed concern over the underutilization of modern markets built by the county government, blaming the trend on cultural practices that discourage traders from embracing formal trading spaces.
Speaking during a live morning show on West TV, Dr. Ottichilo said the county has invested heavily in construction and upgrading markets, yet many remain empty as traders continue to sell along roadsides and in open spaces.
He pointed out Shamakhokho market, where a large shade designed for banana traders lies unused, as well as Mudete and Chavakali markets, which have ample space and facilities but still suffer from low occupancy.
“This is a cultural problem we must confront as a community. We cannot continue investing taxpayers’ money to build modern markets only for them to remain idle while people crowd unsafe and unhygienic spaces along the roads,” he said.
The Governor urged traders to embrace the facilities, stressing that organized markets enhance safety, improve hygiene, and support local economic growth. He also called on community leaders to sensitize residents on the long-term benefits of using the markets.
“The culture of resisting change is holding us back. These markets belong to the people, and they were built to improve livelihoods. It is time for us to use them,” Dr. Ottichilo emphasized.
