Homa bay governor Gladys Wanga has commissioned a grader and an excavator worth Sh65 million to support the ongoing road construction and maintenance efforts across the county.
Speaking after the commissioning ceremony, Wanga said the new equipment will play a critical role in maintaining rural roads across the 40 wards, where infrastructure challenges have persisted for years.
“This equipment will go a long way in assisting us in terms of maintaining particularly our rural roads. We are steadily building our stock of road equipment to strengthen the capacity of our roads and public works department in efficiently maintaining and clearing our roads,” she said.
Wanga highlighted that the county has consistently been allocating Sh10 million to each ward annually, over the past three years to improve road networks.
On urban roads, the governor acknowledged support from the national government, saying collaborative efforts have led to significant improvements.
“We are thankful to the national government. Together, we have managed to rehabilitate many of our urban roads,” she said.
Wanga also addressed long-standing challenges in areas such as Sindo, where residents have experienced poor road network and drainage systems.
“Contractors are already working in Sindo to address these problems. We know there are many roads and not all can be in perfect condition, but we are putting our best foot forward in terms of maintaining as many roads as possible,” she emphasized.
The governor reiterated her administration’s commitment to focusing on rural roads and ensuring equitable development across all wards despite limited resources.
