Igembe North security team destroys 22 illegal gambling machines

Security officers in Igembe North, Meru County, have destroyed 22 unlicensed gambling machines seized from five premises in Laare Town in a crackdown on illegal betting operations.

The machines were destroyed at the Igembe North Sub- County headquarters as authorities warned operators to obtain government licences or risk losing their investments.

Deputy County Commissioner Martin Muhia confirmed that the machines were operating without license, urging operators to comply with government regulations before engaging in the business.

Muhia said the operation was conducted by the sub-county security team as part of efforts to address the spread of unlawful gambling activities.

Igembe North Sub- County Police Commander Gerald Marando said authorities would ensure the machines did not return to the market, adding that enforcement efforts would be extended to villages where similar activities were reported.

He urged residents to report such establishments to enable security officers to take action against the operators.

Marando also raised concern over a resurgence of boda boda theft in the area, warning that police would pursue those involved and ensure anyone arrested faced the law.

He said security agencies would strengthen community policing by working closely with boda boda leaders to improve information-sharing and combat crime.

Community members lamented that gambling had impoverished families and left some children unable to attend school calling on the government to extend enforcement operations to rural areas to protect families and safeguard children’s education.

The machines were destroyed at the Igembe North Sub-county headquarters following an operation targeting establishments operating without the required licences.

”The crackdown is part of efforts to curb illegal gambling and protect residents, particularly young people, from unregulated betting activities.”Said Marando

Authorities said the operation would continue across the sub-county, urging business owners to comply with licensing requirements.

They further warned that premises found operating illegal gambling machines would face seizure of equipment, destruction of the machines and possible legal action.

Residents were also encouraged to report businesses suspected of running unlicensed gambling operations to the relevant authorities.
