Principal Secretary (PS) for Interior and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, has cautioned political actors and residents against engaging in acts of violence ahead of the forthcoming by-elections, warning that security agencies are fully on alert to deal with any threats to peace and order.
Speaking in Ugunja town at Nyasanda Primary School, where leaders and government officials had gathered for a women empowerment fundraiser led by Energy Cabinet Secretary, Opiyo Wandayi, the PS referenced the recent violence witnessed in Kasipul, describing it as a regrettable incident that should not be repeated.
Dr. Omollo said it was unfortunate that some individuals continue to view elections as a contest of hostility rather than a democratic exercise of choice, emphasizing that those found planning or instigating violence, will face legal consequences.
He reminded the public that elections must be conducted in a spirit of tolerance and mutual respect.
PS further noted that the government remains vigilant and that security agencies are on high alert to prevent any form of unrest before, during, and after the by-elections.
“Those seeking leadership should do so in ways of peace and not violence, because leadership is not gotten through violence,” he said, adding that “politics of peace is what propels Kenya forward as a nation.”
The PS commended the residents of Ugunja for their calm and political tolerance, as campaigns for the parliamentary seat intensify.
He observed that the area had set a positive example of peaceful political engagement that other regions should emulate, saying Ugunja had shown that politics can be vibrant and peaceful at the same time.
The fundraiser, which aimed to boost women’s economic empowerment in Siaya County, brought together a wide array of national and county leaders. Among those present were the Siaya Governor James Orengo, Suba North Member of Parliament (MP), Millie Odhiambo, National Assembly Majority Leader, Kimani Ichung’wa, Attorney General, Dorcas Oduor, PS Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda, and Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo, among others.
Wandayi lauded the collaboration between leaders from across the political divide, saying it reflected a growing sense of unity in national development and demonstrated that leadership is about service, not division.
