Kalobeyei Modern Garage to be launched after inspection

A multi-agency inspection team has declared the Kalobeyei Modern Garage ready for launch, paving the way for its official handover to the Turkana County Government.

This approval follows a high-level meeting convened by Turkana Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus, bringing together key implementing partners to address issues that had delayed the operationalization of the facility.

“After carefully reviewing the inspection checklist and consulting all stakeholders involved in the implementation, we have confirmed that the garage is fully equipped with the necessary machinery and adheres to required safety protocols. The infrastructure is, therefore, ready for use,” said Helen Nakaru, the inspection team lead and Deputy Director for Revenue.

Once operational, the facility is expected to serve as a vital public asset, contributing to the social and economic empowerment of the community. It will offer hands-on vocational training, generate employment opportunities for local youth, and foster collaboration between host and refugee populations.

The launch of the garage comes at a strategic time, as Turkana County intensifies efforts to drive industrial growth and unlock economic potential through partnerships. The facility is also poised to position the Kakuma-Kalobeyei area as a regional hub for motor vehicle repair and assembly, particularly among the neighboring Ateker nations—Uganda, South Sudan, and Ethiopia.

The inspection also included a legal compliance review, with the legal team confirming that all statutory and regulatory requirements had been met.

The inspection team is expected to submit a formal report to the Deputy Governor later this week, which will guide the next steps toward the official commissioning and launch of the facility.

The inspection team included representatives from implementing partners and county departments: Catherine Karanja (UN Women, Group Procurement Officer), Sharon Mwende (PWJ, Administrative Assistant), Joshua Oluoch (PWJ, Workshop Officer), Hellen Muchunu (Women, Peace and Security Unit). Others were Kilimo John (Deputy Director, Physical Planning), Joyce Akai (Legal Officer), Karanja John (Assistant Director, TVET), Kaman Steven (Assets and Procurement Officer) and Julius Lokaale (Director of Inspectorate).
