Kericho youth receive career guidance, mentorship

A University don has launched an ambitious career guidance initiative in Kericho County to assist both form four and class eight leavers to make correct career choices.

Dr. Willy Chepkuto, a lecturer at Kabarak University and a passionate advocate for education and youth empowerment, while launching the Mentorship and Career Days initiative across Soliat Ward, Soin Sigowet Sub County, noted several young people make wrong career choices.

The events, hosted in Kamasega, Kaitui, and Motero, brought together professionals, educators, and government officials to help young people make informed academic and career choices.

Dr. Chepkuto emphasized the need for structured career mentorship.

“Many of us selected courses blindly, simply picking from brochures without proper guidance. This mentorship programme ensures that students choose careers that align with their skills, interests, and market demands,” Dr. Chepkuto said.

The sessions covered essential topics such as KUCCPS university applications, TVET and university programmes, marketable courses, and career clusters.

The Kamasega Career Day, held at Kamasega AGC on Thursday, February 6, featured Mr. Leonard Yegon, Dean of Students at Kericho Township TVC/TTI, as the guest facilitator. Representatives from Kamineywo VTC and Sigowet KMTC also played key roles.

Participants received targeted career counselling, with facilitators explaining the importance of technical and vocational education alongside traditional degree programmes.

On Friday, February 7, the mentorship programme moved to Kaitui FPFK Church, attracting a large turnout of students, parents, and professionals. Discussions revolved around career choices, entry requirements for different programmes, and the application process for higher education.

“We want our young people to make informed decisions to avoid the frustrations of unemployment or pursuing careers that do not align with their passions,” said Mr. Yegon.

The final session was held on Saturday, February 8, at Kurabei Chief’s office Hall for Motero, Soliat and Mogonjet/Koirir.

The event brought together area professionals led by prominent scholar/academic Mr. Justo Rero, High School Teacher Madam Ivine Chepchirchir, Teacher Sigei of Kamineywo Comprehensive School, Health professional Festus (Matingwony Junior) Haematologist, Pst. David Cheruiyot (from Mogonjet), and village manager Mr. Geoffrey Kirui (from Motero).

“We have seen too many cases of young people struggling with mismatched careers; one friend studied criminology but now cuts sugarcane for a living. Another, with a degree in actuarial science, sold cakes for years before getting an opportunity. We must change this cycle,” Dr. Chepkuto explained.

Many attendees shared personal stories highlighting the importance of mentorship. One local resident, Yegon, recalled how his love for agriculture and biology in high school could have led him to veterinary science or agricultural education had he received proper guidance.

“I ended up in agriculture, but with better mentorship, I would have pursued a PhD by now; my experience reflects the struggles many students face in selecting career paths,” Yegon noted.

Participants and parents expressed deep appreciation for the initiative. In a heartfelt message, Joseph Kipketer Yego thanked Dr. Chepkuto and the organising team for their commitment.

“This is a huge milestone for the people of Soliat. Career mentorship ensures that education funds, bursaries, and parental investments are optimally utilised. Students now have the right guidance to select quality, marketable courses,” Kipketer said.

Moving forward, the mentorship team will continue engaging students via phone calls, text messages, and WhatsApp platforms to ensure they successfully complete their KUCCPS applications. The event’s success has sparked interest in expanding mentorship programmes to other parts of the county.

“Our goal is to ensure that every student gets the right career direction. This is just the beginning,” Dr. Chepkuto affirmed.
