Pupils at Varsity Ville Model Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) Centre in Gatong’ora Ward, Ruiru Sub-County, are set to benefit from enhanced sports and recreational facilities following the launch of a project to construct a modern swimming pool at the institution.
The project commenced after the Kiambu County Department of Youth Affairs and Sports officially handed over the site to the contractor, marking the beginning of works expected to be completed within two months.
In addition to the swimming pool, the project will include landscaping and fencing to improve safety and enhance the overall environment of the learning institution.
Speaking during the site handover, Kiambu County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication, Ali Osman, said the county government is committed to investing in sports infrastructure from an early age to nurture talent and support holistic child development.
Osman noted that the swimming pool will provide learners with an opportunity to acquire life-saving swimming skills while promoting physical fitness, confidence, and discipline among young children.
“We are committed to ensuring that our children have access to quality sports and recreational facilities that support their growth beyond the classroom. This swimming pool is an investment in their future, as it will help nurture talent, improve physical well-being, and equip them with essential swimming skills,” said Osman.
He added that the project forms part of the county government’s broader strategy to expand sports infrastructure across Kiambu and develop facilities that can also benefit surrounding communities.
The site handover ceremony was attended by Gatong’ora Ward MCA Dan Gitau Kuria, Chief Officer for Sports Godfrey Masolo, Director of Sports Dorcas W. Muthoni, officials from the Departments of Education and Public Works, as well as local community representatives.
Residents welcomed the initiative, noting that it will improve access to modern sporting facilities in the area and expose young learners to swimming, a skill that is increasingly being integrated into the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
They expressed optimism that the facility will not only benefit the ECDE learners but also serve the wider community by promoting active lifestyles and nurturing talent among young people.
The Kiambu County Government has continued to invest in sports infrastructure as part of its efforts to promote youth development, healthy living, and talent identification.
Officials expressed confidence that the new facility will contribute significantly to the overall development of children and strengthen community participation in sports.
