Kiambu County on Monday joined the rest of the nation in celebrating this year’s Mashujaa Day, with calls for unity, civic responsibility, and community development.
The celebrations were held at Gakoe Primary School Grounds in Gatundu North and were led by County Commissioner Henry Wafula. He was accompanied by Deputy County Commissioner Margaret Mbugua, Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia, and Kiambaa MP John Njuguna Wanjiku.
The event featured colourful cultural performances, traditional dances, and a special tribute by the Golden Shiners of Gakoe Secondary School in honour of the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga, recognized for his contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey.
Speaking during the event, Mr. Wafula urged residents to take part in voter registration as a way of honouring Kenya’s freedom fighters. “Our heroes fought hard to give us freedom and a voice. The best way to honour their legacy is by taking part in shaping our nation’s future — starting with voter registration,” he said.
He added that Kenyans should draw inspiration from the sacrifices of those who fought for independence.” Their courage and endurance should inspire us to overcome challenges and strive for a better life as a nation. As citizens of this great country, we too must be willing to leave behind a legacy of service, unity, and progress,” said the County Commissioner.
On his part Kururia commended residents for their large turnout and unity during the celebrations.
“Mashujaa Day is set aside to recognise and celebrate the great people who gave it all so that we could enjoy an independent country. We made the day as colourful as possible because this is one of the ways we show our appreciation as a people,” he said.
Representatives from different sectors also expressed appreciation for ongoing government initiatives.
Mr. Dominic Waweru, representing the boda boda sector, thanked both the national and county governments for empowering youth through the Nyota Initiative and Ajira Mtaani programmes.
“Working closely with the County Commissioner’s office through our chiefs has greatly enhanced security. However, we appeal for more joint efforts to help eradicate the issue of drug abuse, which continues to affect many families in Kiambu,” said Waweru.
Ms. Sarah Wambui, Chairperson of Kamwangi Market, lauded the government for improving business infrastructure.
“We are grateful for the new Kamwangi Market that is being built by the National Government and is near completion as it will improve our working environment. Additionally, our children can now access bursaries easily. Other government services, including court and registration services, are now closer to the people,” said Ms. Wambui.
The event also included the distribution of foodstuffs to residents as a gesture of goodwill, alongside cultural performances and tributes to both national and local heroes.
