The County Government of Kiambu has intensified preparations ahead of the much-awaited Governor’s football Champions Cup finals slated for 7th December.

On Monday Kiambu CECM for Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication Ali Osman, met with senior sports officials and representatives from the four qualifying teams; Githunguri Seniors, Butterfly FC, COPIA FC and B-Fast FC at the county headquarters to prepare for the event.

Also present was Chief Officer for Sports, Godfrey Masolo, alongside Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Kiambu Branch officials, who engaged county leadership on logistical and technical considerations for the tournament.

The meeting mainly focused on ensuring smooth coordination of match officials, crowd management, player welfare and the readiness of the newly upgraded Thigio Grounds, which will host the finals for the first time since its refurbishment.

Mr Osman reaffirmed the County Government’s continued investment in sports as a key tool for youth empowerment and community development.

“We are committed to creating opportunities for young people through sports. Tournaments like this one are essential in nurturing local football talent,” he said.

He further noted that the county has scaled up support to sports structures across all sub-counties, including affiliation fee payments, sports equipment provision, and coaching and refereeing clinics.

Masolo, on his part, highlighted the importance of collaboration with football stakeholders, noting that such partnerships strengthen grassroots football structures.

He emphasized the readiness of the sports department to deliver a successful event, stating this year’s finals will reflect the progress the county has made in upgrading sports facilities and strengthening local competitions.

Representatives from the participating teams also expressed optimism, noting that the tournament has boosted competitiveness and enhanced visibility for local players.

FKF Kiambu officials commended the County Government for its consistent support to football development, citing the long-term benefits for the youth.

Fans across Kiambu are expected to flock Thigio Grounds, which now boasts improved pitch quality, enhanced spectator spaces, and upgraded amenities to watch the finals.

The Governor’s Champions Cup continues to position itself as one of Kiambu’s most influential grassroots tournaments, offering a platform for emerging football talent while fostering unity and sportsmanship within the community.
