The County Assembly of Kirinyaga is in mourning following the death of Beatrice Njoki Mitaru, who was a nominated Member of the County Assembly (MCA) representing Persons with Disabilities.
According to a notification issued by the Office of the Speaker on August 24, 2026, Mitaru passed away at 3:00 a.m. while undergoing treatment at Outspan Hospital in Nyeri.
Mitaru was first nominated to the County Assembly following the 2017 General Election under the Jubilee Party, serving in the Second County Assembly from 2017 to 2022. She was subsequently nominated under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party following the 2022 General Election and continued serving in the Third County Assembly.
At the time of her death, Mitaru was the Vice-Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Finance and Economic Planning.
She also served as a member of the County Assembly Business Committee, the Women Caucus, the Committee on Gender and Youth, the Committee on Environment, Water and Natural Resources, and the Committee on Agriculture, Livestock, Veterinary and Fisheries.
Beyond the County Assembly she served as Leader and Chairperson of the Persons with Disabilities Chapter within the County Assemblies Forum (CAF).
The Speaker, Muteti Murimi, described Mitaru as a dedicated public servant whose commitment to duty made a significant contribution to the work of the County Assembly and the community.
“ Mitaru will be remembered for her selflessness, team spirit and commitment to duty,” the statement said.
In her condolence message, Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru described Ms Mitaru as a dedicated public servant who devoted many years to serving the people.
She said Mitaru was also a strong advocate for inclusion and the rights of persons with disabilities, noting that her commitment, warmth and spirit of service would be greatly missed by the people of Kirinyaga.
On his part Kirinyaga senator, Kamau Murango, said Beatrice was a kind-hearted person and a good leader whose approach to public service was defined by humility, dedication and commitment.
Mitaru was among the Mount Kenya University Class of 2026 graduates, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration and Governance.
