Makueni Subcounty Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Paul Lang’at has called on residents aged 18 years and above and had not registered as voters to register in the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise being conducted by IEBC.
Langat reminded residents that voter registration is both a constitutional right and a civic duty, enabling them to participate in electing leaders of their choice as provided in the 2010 Constitution.
“Registering as a voter is not just a right, it is a duty. Take advantage of this opportunity and ensure your voices are heard in shaping the future by electing the right leaders,” said Lang’at after reading the President’s speech during Mashujaa Day celebrations held at Kambi Mawe Boys Secondary School on Monday.
The administrator urged residents to register early at designated centres within Makueni Constituency and avoid the last-minute rush often witnessed across the country.
On agriculture, Langat advised farmers to plant drought-resistant crops during the October–December short rains, noting that the subcounty is expected to receive minimal rainfall.
“Planting crops that require little rainfall will help ensure food security in the area,” he said.
Turning to the youth, Langat encouraged them to explore job opportunities through digital platforms to remain productive and avoid idleness, which he warned could lead to drug abuse and crime.
On education, the DCC assured residents that the government has put in place adequate security measures as national examinations begin. He noted that Form Four students started their first paper, the French oral exam, on Monday.
He also urged parents and guardians to monitor their children during the long holiday to ensure they remain focused on education and avoid negative influences.
Addressing the same event, Ndukuma Dam Conservancy Director Joshua Mwao announced plans to plant 50,000 tree seedlings across Makueni County in partnership with Equity Bank and the County Government.
Mwao said the trees will be nurtured for nine months to ensure survival and maturity, noting that the initiative aims to restore the county’s ecosystem and mitigate the effects of drought and climate change.
The environmental campaign is part of broader efforts to promote sustainability and resilience against climate-related challenges in Makueni.
