The County Government of Makueni through the Department of Education, ICT and Internship has offered scholarships to 88 students to pursue different courses in university.
The announcement was made Friday by area County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, ICT and Internship Japheth Mang’oka.
Speaking at Makueni Integrated Vocational Empowerment Centre (MIVEC) Wote town in Makueni while flagging off the beneficiaries officially Mang’oka revealed that out of over 30,600 students who sat for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education ( KCSE), only 1,400 qualified to join university 14 of whom attained A grade.
He said the 14 top performers are set to undertake various degrees including Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, Bachelor of Science in Space Engineering, Nursing and Computer engineering among other courses.
“Some students scored A and others B. They are going to pursue different courses at various universities in the country. We are going to pay full scholarships until they complete their studies,” assured Mang’oka while officiating the launch of the scholarship.
While advising them to focus on their studies and work hard, the CECM challenged other learners who never attained points to enable them join university to instead enroll in the Vocational Centres in the county to acquire skills to enable them earn a living besides assisting their families.
“We are also informing those who did not make it to university to enroll in Vocational Centres where they can train and get skills that will help them eke a living for themselves and their families,” Mang’oka said.
Worth noting is that these beneficiaries are students who were awarded scholarship in 2022 and sat for their KCSE examination in 2025.
A beneficiary Ian Mutinda lauded the county government of Makueni for enabling them to pursue education in secondary and now in university.
Mutinda who is set to join Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) to pursue Medicine and Surgery degree promised to work hard and later give back to the community.
“I want first to thank the County Government of Makueni for the support they have given me through secondary and now university. I promise to work hard as I join university and later give back to the people of Makueni,” promised Mutinda.
The County Government also bought a suit case for each beneficiary student.
Mang’oka was accompanied by Ag. Chief Officer for Education Damaris Makau, Chief Officer for Energy Naomi Nthambi, Public Service Board CEO Dr. Redempta Kavindu among other county officials.
